Peter Fedi, active as an Austrian court painter and architect from 1796 to 1842, stands out as one of the most prominent artists of the Biedermeier era. His significance becomes evident in the propensity of people to associate him with anonymous erotic paintings of the time.

Early Years

Fedi was born into a family with a schoolmaster, and an accident involving a changing table caused considerable damage to his spine. However, this affliction did not impede the talents Fedi demonstrated from an early age. His drawing skills allowed him to excel at the St. Anna’s Academy of Fine Art in 1810. Thirteen-year-old Fedi had been studying there for three years. After the death of his father, Fedi earned a living by doing paperwork in a law firm.

The erotica Unveilsais edition traces the images back to 1835 when Fedi was at the peak of his career. According to the Dictionary of erotic artists, this set of pictures was also partly reproduced by Hungarian painter Julius Zauber in the 1880s, but Zauber’s designs appear to be even more obscure than pseudo-Fedi’s originals.
