Obѕcured But oᴜtѕtаndіng
The early chapters of Coxie’s life unfold in a tapestry of mystery, shrouded in the veils of time. The exact year of his birth remains elusive, as does the precise location that cradled him into existence. His artistic genesis, too, is cloaked in obscurity, as the masters who imparted their wisdom upon him linger in the shadows of anonymity.
Among the speculative whispers of art historians, the name Bernard van Orley of Brussels emerges as a potential maestro who guided Coxie through the labyrinth of artistic expression. It is posited that a shared favor with the Flemish cardinal Willem van Enckevort might have paved the path for Coxie, linking his destiny with that of van Orley. The argument weaves its threads around the notion that van Orley, a prominent figure, could have acted as the conduit introducing his protégé to influential patrons.
As the pages of history turn, the narrative takes a decisive twist with the passing of van Orley in 1541. In the wake of his mentor’s departure, Coxie found himself entrusted with a sacred mission—to bring fruition to van Orley’s incomplete masterpiece: the stained glass windows adorning the venerable Brussels Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula. A testament to his skill and reverence, this commission would etch Coxie’s name into the annals of art, setting the stage for the unfolding saga of the ‘Flemish Raphael.’
