In the clandestine world of Bernard Montorgueil, helpless men find themselves bound to various instruments of torture, subjected to humiliation by commanding mistresses adorned in leather boots and intimidating outfits. Within Montorgueil’s unique perspective, the power dynamics are clear, with women confidently calling the shots. Betty Dodson, born in 1929, initially trained as a fine artist in the 1950s. In 1968, she showcased her first collection of erotic art at the Wickersham Gallery in New York City. Transitioning from her art career in the 1970s, Dodson began studying… Here, it is the grace more than violence that leads to the surrender of virility, a gentleness that makes humiliation sensual.
Considered by many BDSM art critics as one of the most delicate portrayals of male masochism in European art, Montorgueil’s work stands out among the best erotic illustrators of the first half of the 20th century.
Little is known about the background of this French BDSM and spanking artist, Montorgueil, a pseudonym. Creating drawings between 1920-1940, he continued clandestinely in the 1950s. His illustrations adorned several books, including the notorious “Venus.”
Despite the mystery surrounding Montorgueil, his kinky designs predominantly featuring femdom-malesub themes have been reproduced with astonishing fidelity. Some editions are in black and white, while others are colorized in watercolors. The following pieces primarily fall into the latter category, occasionally including a black and white version for comparison.
