In the vast expanse of emotions, the realms of love and intimacy find themselves entangled in the intricate threads of cultural expectations. Distorted stereotypes have woven a complex tapestry, particularly in regions like Asia and the Middle East, where intimacy attitudes often bear the burden of societal stigmatization due to their deviation from heteronormative, patriarchal structures prevalent in these societies. The Western world, with its distinct conceptions of love and intimacy, stands in stark contrast.

Seeking to unravel these intricacies and shed light on the pervasive nature of such attitudes, a survey was conducted among university-aged students in the multicultural cityscape of Sydney. This Australian metropolis, known for its diversity, serves as a microcosm for exploring perceptions across cultural boundaries.

The fundamental question posed in the survey was a poignant one: “What are your perceptions of love and sexuality in Asia and the Middle East?” The responses received serve as a kaleidoscope of perspectives, offering glimpses into the multifaceted landscape of beliefs and attitudes held by the individuals navigating the complex interplay of culture, tradition, and personal values. Let us delve into the nuanced mosaic of thoughts that emerged from the participants’ reflections.

In tracing the historical trajectory of attitudes toward love and sexuality in the Middle East and Asia, it becomes evident that the current landscape is deeply intertwined with a legacy of colonial influence and cultural misinterpretations.

The enforcement of penal codes by the British in the Middle East, targeting behaviors perceived as deviant, notably homosexuality, left an indelible mark on societal norms. France, too, introduced similar laws, shaping perceptions that endure to this day. The discovery of texts like “The Perfumed Garden” by French colonialists further distorted the lens through which Europe viewed Arab men as lustful and women as objectified, perpetuating stereotypes that linger.

Venturing back to ancient times, between 400 BCE and 200 CE, the Mahabharata and the Kama Sutra, ancient Hindu texts, acknowledged a third gender known as Hijras. In early India, Hijras were revered as divine beings or “pirwānn,” closer to the gods, challenging essentialist notions of gender and sexuality. However, with the British colonial presence in the 18th century, Hijras faced societal ostracization, culminating in the implementation of the Criminal Tribes Act, pushing them to the fringes of South Asian society.

In 17th-century Japan, the Shunga, a sexual education manual, symbolized the sexual liberation of the Edo period. Daughters of the Samurai class were gifted Shunga on their wedding night, portraying sexual activities in all their forms. However, with Japan’s opening to the Western world in the mid-19th century, Shunga was deemed inappropriate by Western standards, leading to its banishment during the Meiji period, coinciding with England’s Victorian age and heightened sexual frigidity.

Ironically, Western media often portrays the Middle East and Asia as sexually conservative, ignoring the rich history of sexual liberalism disrupted by colonial interventions. Dr. Sorbera notes the hegemonic, monolingual, Anglo-centric culture dominating the West, perpetuating ignorance about the nuances of sexuality in other cultures.

To dismantle these colonial narratives, it is imperative to critically evaluate the narratives we receive about the rest of the world, especially regarding intimacy, in a Western culture that struggles to discuss matters like “50 Shades of Grey” above a whisper. Unraveling these complexities requires a commitment to understanding diverse cultural perspectives and challenging preconceived notions ingrained through centuries of influence and misunderstanding.
