Between Adémism and Impressionism: Naked Photographs of Ralph Collin

The artist Raphael Collin (1850–1916), whose works are currently on display, helped to forge ties between French and Japanese art since prominent Japanese masters like Kuroda Siki, Kum Kiichir, and Okada Sábursuk frequently visited his workshop. These painters would be considered the forerunners of the yega (or Wstrn-style) movement in the late 1800s. Collin would be awarded the Order of the Rising Sun of Japan in recognition of his leadership. The artist is renowned for his nudist paintings as well as for his illustrations of the Greek novels Däphnis and Chlo and Songs of Bilitis. Although Collin tended toward academicism, some of his works are of a more modern style, such as the drawing Crucified Figure, which recalls the unconventional maneuvers of French Rops.
