Peter Fedі, an Austrian court painter and architect from 1796 to 1842, emerges as a prominent figure of the Biedermeier era. Fedі was born into a family led by a schoolmaster. An unfortunate fall from a changing table resulted in considerable damage to his spine. However, this affliction did not impede the talents Fedі displayed from an early age. His adept drawing skills enabled him to excel at the St. Anna’s Academy of Fine Art in 1810, where the thirteen-year-old Fedі had been studying for three years. Following his father’s demise, Fedі earned a living by engaging in paperwork at a law firm.

 

The encounter with Joseph Barth a couple of years later had a transformative impact on Fedі’s life. Barth, an influential ophthalmologist to Emperor Joseph II and an avid art collector, played a pivotal role in shaping Fedі’s career. His connections with many significant artists facilitated Fedі in securing a position at the Imperial Gallery of Coins and Antiquities. There, he served as a draftsman and engraver, contributing to the designs of some Austrian banknotes from that era. Fedі also ventured to Salzburg and Venice for further studies under the guidance of the gallery director from St. Stephen’s.

The erotic masterpiece traces its origins back to 1835 when Ferdinand was at the zenith of his career. According to the Dictionary of Erotic Artists, this collection of images was also partially reproduced by the Hungarian painter Julius Zauber in the 1880s. However, Zauber’s designs appear to delve even further into obscurity compared to pseudo-Ferdinand’s original creations.
