Inspiration is a mysterious, intangible force that envelops the artist, writer, inventor, and even the scientist. In Greek mythology, muses were believed to be the source of that inspiration. They presided over the arts and sciences, often guiding and advising individuals on fantastic ideas and discoveries. The word “muse” is derived from “mēmē,” signifying a place where creativity is gloriously expressed. People are further stimulated by muses, and the cycle of ingenuity continues.

Clio, Calliope, Erato, Euterpe, Melpomene, Polymnia, Terpsichore, Thalia, and Urania were the nine Muses. Explore more about the arts they represented and the individuals who were inspired by them.

Who are the Muses?

Daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, the nine Muses were born to enthuse. Zeus, the king of all the Greek gods, and their mother, Mnemosyne, the Titaness of Memory, were their divine parents. Memory was particularly fitting as the mother of the Muses because, in a largely illiterate society, memory was essential to recall the works of poets and scientists.

The nine Muses lived on Mount Helicon, often accompanying the god Apollo, whose domain frequently overlapped with theirs. Apollo presided over concepts such as Music, Light, eloquence, poetry, and the sun.

In poetic composition, ancient bards would invoke the Muses to assist them in singing, narrating a story, or remembering the great tales of heroes and heroines. The invocation would begin, “Sing, O Muse…” or “Sing, Goddess…”

Calliope, the Muse of epic poetry, as depicted by Charles Meynier in 1798 and housed at the Cleveland Art Museum, embodies the essence of “beautiful voice” in ancient Greek. In artistic renderings, she is often portrayed holding a scroll or tablet inscribed with famous poetry.

As the eldest sister, Calliope holds the esteemed position of trailblazer among the Muses. Many writers invoked her power and support when composing fantastical poetry about Greek heroes and their adventures.

One of the most renowned invocations of Calliope is found at the beginning of Homer’s epic poem, the Iliad. The bard calls upon the Muse:

“Sing, O goddess, the anger of Achilles son of Peleus, that brought countless ills upon the Achaeans. Many a brave soul did it send hurrying down to Hades, and many a hero did it yield a prey to dogs and vultures, for so was the will of Zeus fulfilled…” (Iliad, opening lines)

In earlier eras, Calliope’s role extended to encompass music, song, and dance. Her son, Orpheus, was blessed with her talent, becoming an unparalleled musician. According to Apollodorus, his singing and lyre-playing were so stirring that even “stones and trees” were moved by it. Philostratus, in his Imagines, also comments on Calliope’s blessing, describing Orpheus as someone whose music could charm creatures lacking the intelligence of humans, a sentiment echoed by other mythological writers.

In ancient Greece, epic poetry was typically accompanied by music, with the belief that if the Muse was impressed by the bard’s skill, she would dance to it, bestowing her favor upon the creator.

Propertius, in Elegies 3.2, remarks about Calliope: “The Muses are my friends, my poems are dear to the reader, and Calliope never wearies of dancing to my rhythms.

2. Clіo

 

 

Clio, the Muse of History, as envisioned by Charles Meynier in 1800 and showcased at the Cleveland Art Museum, held the extraordinary ability to immortalize individuals—be they heroes, poets, or politicians. She accomplished this by rendering their deeds so indelible that they would echo throughout the ages. The very name “Clio” signifies “to make famous/renowned.” The prevailing belief held that Clio could bless those she favored with historical immortality.

Statius, a Roman epic writer, ardently desired his work to withstand the test of time. In his composition “Thebaid” (10.630), he invokes the Muse: “Begin thou, unforgiving Clio, for all the ages are in thy keeping, and all the storied annals of the past.” The Muses, as goddesses of great power, considered Clio indispensable to the memory and future of mankind. Since she knew which deeds would shape history, she possessed knowledge about the future—anticipating which actions society would deem worthy of remembrance.

Valerius Flaccus, acknowledging her formidable power, states, “Clio… to thee, O Muse, has been vouchsafed the power to know the hearts of the gods and the ways by which things come to be.” (Argonautica 3)
